LOCALIZATION

Localization goes above and beyond translating. While translations focus primarily on the conversion of one text to another, localization involves the “translation” of text, images, colors, music, and more. In short, localization is the act of adapting any product or destination (website) to a specific region or culture.

This is a particularly complex process that many translation firms fail to perform correctly.

WEBSITE LOCALIZATION

TRANSCREATION

Transcreation exists to fulfill a need beyond literal or precise translation. It is most commonly used in straplines, advertising, brand-led campaigns, websites and marketing materials.

Transcreation takes translation further. It adapts a target text for a particular locale and a target audience. Instead of offering an equivalent of a phrase or sentence, the message behind the text is derived, and then is recreated in the target language. It often involves the introduction of new words, or the omission of certain sentences or phrases. At times it will include an explanatory phrase, or a change in emphasis to fit local expectations or markets. And in certain situations, such as a culturally specific strapline, it will involve a major change in the text.

The process involves industry experience, knowledge of the target audience, awareness of the local culture - and inspiration. In contrast to translation, it also involves a great deal of subjectivity, as it addresses emotions as well as the intellect. The criteria for evaluating a transcreation are quite different from those of a translation, and typically, the most successful transcreations involve substantial interaction between the client and the transcreator.

TECHNICAL WRITING

Technical writing seeks to deliver relevant, useful and accurate information to the end user, such as how to use a software application, operate a device, safely consume packaged food, etc. If you’ve ever read a user manual, you will probably know what technical writing is, though it comes in many forms.

The steps in technical writing include:

- Identification of needs, audience(s), and scope
- Planning
- Research & content development
- Testing / review and revision
- Delivery of content
- Evaluation and feedback
- Revision and finalization

In other words, if the activity requires expertise or skill to perform, then technical writing is a necessary component.

TRANSCRIPTION

A transcription service will convert speech into a written or electronic text document.

While typically one of the last phases of a translation project, the quality of desktop publishing can affect the entire tone, look and feel of any set of localized materials. These MT systems can range from basic rule-based systems to more advanced neural machine translation (NMT) models.

Our approach to quality

Every client has different objectives and every localization and translation project is unique. Although how we manage projects is important, understanding how the project outputs will be used and how what we deliver will be scrutinized is central to how we provide our services.

Quality Management Process

We believe in establishing objectives at the start of the project, measuring the outputs to ensure they meet these objectives before each delivery step and then learning from the experience once the project has been completed. Some of the tools that enable us to do this include the briefing documents provided by the customer, detailed work package documentation for our translation and and localization teams, adapted quality control techniques and in-house learning logs.

We believe quality should be front-loaded, and must start as far upstream as possible. Translation and localization are linear processes that typically involve a team of individuals that play different roles (translator > editor ... etc.), each with their own unique and separate tasks. In localization projects, many companies will leave the quality review until the very end of the project. We believe this approach wastes time and can add to the overall cost of the project. Translation involves converting content from one language to another, while localization goes a step further by adapting content to the cultural and linguistic nuances of the target audience.

By charging per source word (character), we can provide you with an accurate quote up-front, and you will know exactly how much you will be paying before we even start working.

The minimum fee is a fixed charge for very small projects to cover the operational work involved in the project. We try to avoid charging you minimum fees because we understand that every customer has different needs, and we try to best adapt our processes to meet those demands. Be sure to ask your account manager about ways to make the whole process more flexible.
